So I'm planning on getting my third literary tattoo in January. I have three planned, but I simply cannot decide which one I want to get. Perhaps you all could tell me which one you like bestttt?

First, A Lord of the Rings idea. My dad got me into LOTR forever ago, and I fell in love. Hahah. But long story short, I want to get the quote:

Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens

across my back. The reason behind this one is because my family and I have been through SO MUCH in the past two years. Like, people actually cry when I tell them our story. But throughout all of this, I have maintained my faith in God. It has been a hard road sometimes, and I've been upset with him, but in the end, I always come to him.

Second, a Twilight tattoo. Now, I know I'll probably get a lot of flack for this one, but I personally think they're amazing books, errors and all. I want to get the quote:

Carlisle was right

on top of my left foot. The reasoning behind this is once again religious, and if you want me to explain, I will. It's one of my favorite ideas, but it's kind of diluted. Anywho...

Third idea is from an EE Cummings poem. anyone lived in a pretty how town was the first Cummings poem I read, and I loved it so much. I re read it all the time, and each time I fall in love with it over and over. But my favorite line from this poem is:

down they forgot as up they grew

I love this line, because it shows that as we get older, we lose our innocence, and our sense of wonder. If you've read the poem, you know what this line means, and it's really hard to give a full explanation without launching into a full fledged poem analysis. haha.

So, thoughts?

FINALLY EIGHTEEN!

  • Dec. 27th, 2009 at 11:09 AM
I'm finally turning 18 on Tuesday. I've crept on this community for a good two years and all the while thinking about what I want.
I've pretty much decided on this:

For whatever we lose (like a you or a me)
it's always ourselves we find in the sea

- E. E Cummings

I would love to get this because I live in a town called Manchester- by the- SEA, and I want to return after college- it kind of reminds me where I'm from, and who's waiting for me. Maggie, Molly, Milly and May is also the first E.E Cummings' poem I read, and now I own three of his books, and read a poem a night. (my favorite being Somewhere I've Never Traveled)

My questions to you experts are:
  • Where do you think I should get it? I'm between upper back and below the elbow on my left arm.
  • How much do you estimate it would cost?
  • If I should get anything else with it (might as well get my moneys worth... ) I was thinking a small starfish, shell, or boat.
  • And finally, where does one find fonts?
Thanks for your help in advance!
I hope you all have a great new year!

I got these lights for $5 at Urban Outfitters because we're desperately in need of a lighting solution in our living room.
Now that I have them I'm not sure what to do with them! They don't really mesh well with the style in our living room, and the colors a bit off but I can totally just spray paint them (I don't like the white arm on it anyway). What do you think? Where should I place them? I was thinking on either side of the poster above the couch, but how high?

yes/no? Should I do anything to it?

I was given this old wooden librarian's trolley, my mum works at a school and they were throwing it out, she thought I might like it. I can't make up my mind about it! I spent most of yesterday fixing it up, I gave it a good scrubbing, scraped the paint marks off and buffed it with some wood oil. It has shelves on both sides. I've put a few things on it to see how it looks and make up my mind. I'm undecided so be as honest as you like. It doesn't really "go" with my apartment but the nostalgic value is hard to pass up. I toyed vaguely with the idea of painting it white, but I'm worried it might end up looking shitty, and I am generally opposed to painting over wood.
I'm wondering what I can do with it. Should I keep it? Should I paint it? Strip it? Leave it? Horrible, get rid of it?

Lamps.

  • Dec. 26th, 2009 at 5:17 PM
Hello everyone.
Okay so I saw these lamp things at world market today and I really want to get them. I have seen them online in peoples places before too. Only problem is, I have no idea how they work...
http://www.worldmarket.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3597156#back This is the link to the ones I like.
It says to use with a cord kit. Im assuming that Ill be having cords going up from the outlet to the ceiling/hanging lamp. I really dont like this idea but I also cant dig into the apartment walls just to hang a lamp. Anyone have any experience with these? Or even the battery powered ones?

Oh Dylan

  • Dec. 24th, 2009 at 5:10 PM
Hello.
So here I am, looking for advice on a future tattoo.
I am in love with Dylan Thomas.
Very original, I know.
This poem "Love in the Asylum" is haunting my soul of late. To the point that I want a quote from it forever inked onto my body.

here; if you've never read it

The line "a girl as mad as birds" needs to be a part of me. So the question now remains... Where??
So I have come here, to the folks that would understand, for advice on placement and font and whatever else I can get!

Silver Paint

  • Dec. 24th, 2009 at 2:10 PM
Hi everyone! I am looking for the right silver paint for my dresser. I have primed it with silver spray paint and am now looking for a rich silver. I'm aware of Ralph Lauren's Regent Metallics silver and while it's beautiful, it's also pricey. Can anyone come up with a cheaper alternative? If necessary I'll splurge on the Ralph Lauren but that means I'll have to wait till after Christmas/next paycheck.

While we're at it, any reviews on the Ralph Lauren silver paint?

Thanks!

nietzsche questions.

  • Dec. 24th, 2009 at 12:53 PM
I have a few questions for you guys.
Really, I'm just looking for opinions before I make a final decision but I know I want a Nietzsche quote going up my side (like the Hayden Panettiere tattoo that was mentioned a few posts ago.)
But I can't decide if I want it in German or English or how it should face. Do I want the words facing my stomach or back?

I also don't know what font I want. I like calligraphy type fonts (I already have a wrist tattoo in windsong) but I'm not sure if I want to use that font again..

The quote is "What is the darkness, star, to you?" if that helps at all.

Any suggestions are welcome.

King Solomon reference

  • Dec. 23rd, 2009 at 9:01 PM
Hello everyone! I've been lurking this community for a while and thought I'd finally join to get your opinions on my first tattoo.

For the past three years I've been battling depression. There are nights where I can't go to sleep because the thought of how easy it would be keeps me awake, and there are mornings where I can't bring myself to get up. I haven't really spoken to anyone about this because I feel it's a solitary confinement and talking out my problems won't really change the way I feel. I have good days and bad days.

I stumbled upon the phrase this too shall pass while reading a book my friend gave me. After looking it up, I found the story of King Solomon and the engraved silver ring.

The meaning behind this phrase,  I find, is really powerful and I'd like to get it as my first tattoo as a reminder.

I really like the font Traveling Typewriter, it's simple. Placement-wise I'm unsure. I wanted to get it on the inside of my left forearm, just below my elbow but my aunt objects to this. She wants me to think of other places to get it, in fear that I won't be able to cover it up (although I never really wear t-shirts). I was thinking maybe on my left shoulder blade? Or just ignore my aunt and get it on my forearm?

I was also wondering if I should capitalize This. I've seen a lot of tattoos and articles with it both capitalized and lower case.

I know a lot of people have this phrase tattooed, but it holds a lot of meaning for me and that's what's important.

If you could help me that would be greatly appreciated! All of your tattoos are lovely and from previous posts and comments I know you all are very helpful!

P.S Should I keep it as one line or break it up?

Show Us Some...Tacky Christmas

  • Dec. 23rd, 2009 at 8:13 PM
My mother asked me earlier today if we were having our usual Friday post. When I told her no, she suggested having a 'Tacky Christmas' thread. I'll get it started early.

Let's make her happy, shall we? Pictures can come from anywhere do not need to be your own, of course.

ee cummings tattoo

  • Dec. 23rd, 2009 at 4:33 PM
I've been meaning to get my first tattoo and really wanted a quote from an ee cummings poem. I needed it to be short because I want to place it down the side of my back like Hayden Panettiere's and found two that I really like.
They are:
"-tomorrow is our permanent address"
-or-
"no sunbeam ever lies"

Any thoughts? Suggestions?

Hi! I live in an adorable 2-bedroom in Brooklyn that has tons of potential but is currently kind of a craphole thanks to some awful ex-roommates. The kitchen is my first project, and I'm having an impossible time deciding on paint.

Photobucket

Photobucket

My first idea was to paint the inside of the shelves a bright, happy green and the outside + lower cabinets crisp white, the same as the walls are going to be. My thinking was that shiny white dishes would reflect the green and somehow be pretty, but the green wouldn't be over powering.

But then I started thinking that painting the lower cabinets the same color as the walls would be too stark and so maybe I should just go with the existing scheme and just paint over the seafoam with bright green?

BTW, the colors I'm thinking of using are Benjamin Moore Decorator's White and Lucky Charm Green.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Updike Tat. Your Opinion?

  • Dec. 21st, 2009 at 11:52 AM
I absolutely love John Updike, so I always knew I'd get a tattoo relating to John Updike, and when he passed away at the beginning of '09, I knew this tattoo was even more important. SO, I have narrowed it down to three ideas; please comment and tell me your favorite. 1) rabbit, run - in script on my right hip (I have a Hamlet citation on my left. It is my favorite out of the Rabbit series and the novel that sparked a quartet of wonderful books. 2) rabbit at rest - i also loved At Rest, and figured this was very appropiate because of Updike's death; I think of it as a little homage. Updike is at rest. It is also the final book in the quartet. Would go on right hip. 3) In the pit of the year a king was born - My favorite line in my favorite Updike novel - The Centaur. This is considerably less blantantly Updike-ish, but still nontheless written by the man himself. I think it is a pretty phrase. What do you all think?

So many ideas...

  • Dec. 21st, 2009 at 3:27 AM
Hello all! I've been reading for quite some time, and I've finally decided to have my say.
I'm going to end up looking like the guy from Momento if I don't stop adding to my list.
I'd like some opinions on which you think are cool and which you think are rubbish:

1. I'd quite like "Aude aliquid dignum", which means "Dare something worthy". I read this somewhere once and scribbled it down, but i can't for the life of me remember where it was.
2. "It is the possibility of having dreams come true that makes life interesting"-- The Alchemist
3. Mischief Managed (I know, I know).
4. What pleasure, sir, find we in life, to lock it from action and adventure?--Shakespeare
5. Remember to the last, that while there is life there is hope--charles dickens
6. What will you adventure? --Shakespeare
7. Hope, Hope to the last! --Dickens

I'm really thinking about getting 6 & 7 on either side of my collar bone, but we'll see.

help!

Catcher in the Rye/Holden Caulfield or Chuck Palahnuik tattoos?

EDIT

My apologies.. I have pregnancy brain and I guess I didn't word this correctly. I want to get a quote pertaining to either (..but preferably Caulfield-related) and I just wanted to see the ideas that others had had.. mostly out of curiosity, I suppose.

Sorry for the confusion.

Also, I'm not concerned for your lack of appreciation for Palahnuik. Save it.

Placement help?

  • Dec. 20th, 2009 at 11:46 AM
I'm seriously considering getting my first tattoo shortly after my 21st birthday. The problem is, I have absolutely no idea where to place it.

The quote is by Oscar Wilde from the Preface of The Picture of Dorian Gray:

"The only excuse for making a useless thing is that one admires it intensely. All art is quite useless."

I don't want it to be very large (as in something that would cover my whole back or something), and I don't particularly want it on my wrist. Any idea are welcome, and I'd love to see any other Wilde-related tattoos anyone here might have!
